Keystone Native Plant Finder

Water Drop on Lupine

While watching this excellent video, Garden For Wildlife – Episode 7: Nature’s Best Hope with Dr. Doug Tallamy, he points us gardeners to a resource we can use to find out which native plants give us the best bang for our buck. Most resources simply tell you that an individual plant is a “host plant for caterpillars” but finding out which and how many is not easy to find. As a person who loves research, I even get discouraged and frustrated. However this tool accepts your zip code and serves you a list of plants ranked by the diversity of species it supports. Such a great way to prioritize plantings in our shrinking yardscapes. Check it out, and let me know what you find out in your area.

NWF Native Plant Finder

Why do we gardeners of food plants care about native plants? Why would we want MORE bugs in our yard? Or do we? Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Also, please share videos or resources you’ve used in the past. Let’s work together and see if we can’t change the world one yard at a time.💚

  1. I have learned so much from Dr. Tallamy! Especially his book, The Nature of Oaks. He details the intricate interactions between native plants (specifically oaks) and insects. It’s an important bool.
And thanks for the link! I will pursue it.
